[10:41]<+camerongray> Hey jacky
[10:41]<@jacky> camerongray: Hello
[10:44]<+camerongray> Got a new antenna, so much better now
[10:44]<+camerongray> http://dl1dbc.net/SAQ/miniwhip.html
[10:45]<@jacky> viewing..
[10:46]<@jacky> heh
[10:46]<@jacky> if possible, it is still better to have an outdoor antenna, as high as possible, and the right size for the freq desired
[10:47]<@jacky> that is what everythng is compared to
[10:47]<@jacky> I've no doubt that this amp'd antenna is better than some of the other indoor stuff you have triedd
[10:47]<@jacky> and I'm glad it is performing for you
[10:47]<@jacky>
[10:47]<@jacky> What sort of stuff have you found interesting?
[10:52]<+camerongray> Yeah, benefit is that I can stick it outside becuase it's small (hang out the window)
[10:52]<+camerongray> Although it actually seems to work best up in the attic
[10:52]<+camerongray> Haven't played too much but it works really well
[10:52]<@jacky> experiment... whatever works!
[10:52]<@jacky> heh
[10:52]<+camerongray> Issue I've had is that you can't power it off of a switch mode power supply as it puts so much noise in
[10:53]<+camerongray> Works fine off battery though
[10:53]<@jacky> I only skimmed... does it come with its own switching power supply?
[10:53]<+camerongray> Tested quickly with a bunch of regular batteries stuck together and have just bought a 12v rechargable battery pack to use with it that I will try tonight
[10:53]<+camerongray> Nah, it has a feed unit that you give 12v which is fed up the coax to the antenna
[10:53]<@jacky> feed unit?
[10:54]<+camerongray> A little box that injects power into the coax that goes up to the antenna
[10:54]<@jacky> anyway... where were you getting the switching ps from? just something you had laying around?
[10:54]<+camerongray> So I can have the antenna in the attic yet power it from downstairs
[10:54]<@jacky> ok on feed unit
[10:54]<+camerongray> I had a couple from old routers that I tried as well as an ATX PSU from a PC - All were pretty good quality
[10:55]<@jacky> good quality... hehe.. meaning, from a computer viewpoint?
[10:55]<@jacky> not a rf viewpoint?
[10:56]<+camerongray> Yeah
[10:57]<+camerongray> At first I thought it was the antenna that was the problem but spoke to someone on IRC who pointed out the power supply
[10:57]<+camerongray> http://flat.camerongray.me/~camerong/public/nodirlist/wefax.png - Was able to decode Weather Fax images
[10:57]<@jacky> oh yeah
[10:57]<+camerongray> That was without power applied, even better with power
[10:57]<@jacky> old switchers were notorious (ps designed for radios that is.. I think computer switchers are just awful (rf noise wise) to this day)
[10:58]<@jacky> I think the technology has advanced such that a modern switcher (for radios) is ok
[10:59]<@jacky> Was able to decode Weather Fax images <<< cool
[10:59]<@jacky> but spoke to someone on IRC <<< what sort of chan? radio related?
[10:59]<+camerongray> Yeah, #priyom on Freenode
[10:59]<+camerongray> Numbers stations.etc
[11:00]<@jacky> numbers stations... hehehe
[11:00]<@jacky> you are going to find a career in MI6, aren't you?
[11:04]<+camerongray> haha
[11:06]<@jacky> 01001100011101001
[11:14]<+camerongray> lol
[11:15]<@jacky> :)
[11:16]<@jacky> ( I wonder what I said...)
[11:20]<+camerongray> Can't wait to get it back up in the attic with power to see how it works
[11:20]<+camerongray> Last time it was up there I had the dodgy power supply
[11:21]<@jacky> what are you going to do? power it with batteries and recharge them?
[11:22]<@jacky> the battery charger itself might be VERY noisy
[11:26]<+camerongray> Yeah, charge the battery then run without the charger
[11:27]<+camerongray> It's like 4000mAh so will last for ages
[11:27]<+camerongray> (antenna pulls 15mA)
[11:28]<@jacky> ah
